Editing My Name is John - Scene 3

I have been editing My Name is John on and off for a while now and the film has had some major and minor changes over these couple of these weeks, so over these next blogs im going to be showing each scene discussing thing that were wrong with the scenes how i fixed them and what plans i have for the future of the this Film. Unfortunately the Exports dont have sound so i will just be talking about visual cuts and what i plan to do with sound.

Scene 3 -
Scene 3 is one of the scene that has gone through the most changes as in the original draft the scene was only one clip, but since then it has 5 clips and now the draft 2 of the scene is 3 clips. The reason that the original scene is only one clip is because when we had done this shoot we had got tow different ways of filming once was where the camera just stayed still and zoomed in when the actors went into the kitchen to fight, this was the shot that i had used in the first draft, but we had also got a shot where the camera followed them into the kitchen. The problem with this scene is we only got this shot from the point where the wife gets up and walks into the kitchen, meaning i had to somehow match this up with the previous shot. The only way to do this was to have a cut away in between, but the cut aways we got didn't really fit, this was probably because our camera operator got the shot after packing away the lighting meaning it was never gonna match. To fix this me and the camera operator went back to my house to get a few more cut aways, we got a cut away of a saw outside to go over the top of when she says her husband tried to cut her in half and the others where just kitchen cut aways like the kettle or coffee machine. When i got back to editing i put these cut aways in and they still didn't work. So when we had a meeting that week we discussed the problem with our lecture and he suggested as we had large banging noises in the scene we got a shot of the dog getting jumped by the noise we had got a shot of the dog originally but he was just looking up. I went along to get this shot as it was going to be a late shoot as i needed my mother as she is the only one the dog listens too. This cut away works great in the scene and makes the cut between the two clips hardly noticeable.

Examples of the cut aways we got from the first shoot.

The first draft where i only use one clip.

Draft 2 with the dog cut away in the middle to blend the two clips.
